Villa Park’s Famous Sears Homes

From 1909 to 1940, the Sears Roebuck and Company, based in Chicago, offered customers the opportunity to purchase a home building kit from their Sears House Catalogs. Everything needed to build a home was included in the purchase price – building plans, lumber material, roofing, plumbing, electrical, lighting. Excavation and foundation was not included. Over 70,000 of these houses were built in America and there were over 350 styles.

In 1986, a windshield survey indicated the potential that Villa Park could have nearly 80 Sears Catalog Homes. Since then, the Preservation Commission has recognized fourteen homes as being authentic and have awarded the owners with a historic plaque, which include the Argyle, Barrington, Del Rey, Crescent, Haven, Hollywood, Martha Washington, Osborn, Rodessa, and Sherburne models.
